A mother’s grief is part of the latest attempt to derail criminal justice legislation which passed during January’s lame-duck session.

In September 2019, Christopher Miller attacked his estranged wife and children, shooting his 18-month-old son, Colton, ten times in the head. Cassandra Tanner Miller of Joliet says a high bail – eliminated in the bill – would have kept Miller away from her.

“Which one of you who supported this bill, and support it currently, is going to tell my daughter that she and those like her are safer with this new bill?”

The girl, nine years old at the time, escaped the attack; then Christopher Miller killed himself.

Addressing Gov. JB Pritzker, Cassandra Tanner Miller said, “I beg you to actually think of all the little kids and the women and the men who don’t have their babies anymore.”
