Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Four alumni of the University of Illinois Springfield were honored over the weekend during Homecoming for their contributions outside of their time on campus.

During the college’s annual Alumni Gala Saturday, September 20, retired Illinois Supreme Court Justice Robert Carter was given UIS’ Alumni Achievement Award.  Carter was one of the earliest graduates of the former Sangamon State University, and had a legal career spanning more than 43 years.  He retired as a justice in 2022.  He also earned a degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Joyce Nardulli received UIS’ Distinguished Service Award, contributing more than 25 years of volunteer leadership at the university,  She’s volunteered with NPR Illinois, chaired the UIS Alumni Board, mentoring students, and speaking at three commencements, just to name a few ways she’s served the community.

UIS’ Alumni Humanitarian Award went to Tami Silverman, president and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute.  Silverman, according to UIS, has overseen more than $150 million in initiatives helping children and youth.  She serves on a number of boards and in organizations.  She is a former CEO of Soujourn Shelter & Services in Springfield.

And, Mallory Wescott received the UIS Rising Star Alumni Award.  Wescott is a former Springfield Park Board member, is a nurse practitioner, a coach in basketball and softball, and is treaturer of the Illinois Association of Park Districts.
