Rochester, IL (WAND) – Rochester schools approved a plan for major cuts in the district on Wednesday night.

School officials said they’ve revised the reduction plan from over $3 million in cuts, down to $2.2 million.

By 2028, the district, however, will likely be operating in the red.

The new plan would close a Rochester elementary school, cut 22 staff positions, combine some positions and cut pay for some administrators.

School leaders added that the district ran into problems by heavily relying on COVID money, which has now run out.

The Board of Education is also requiring administrators to meet with staff and union leadership in the next two weeks.
